Keepers and innovators of the Karate Way

Eminent figures of Shotokan Karate

Shotokan Karate has been shaped and enriched by the teaching and dedication of extraordinary figures who have marked its history and evolution. We present three masters whose impact extends worldwide, each with a unique path but united by deep knowledge and passion for this martial art:

KEIGO ABE - 10th Dan
JSKA World Founder

Shihan KEIGO ABE was born on October 28, 1938, in Japan. In 1953, he began practicing karate in his junior high school under the guidance of a Shito Ryu master from Okinawa. In 1956, he enrolled at Nihon University and, at the same time, started training at the legendary JKA Hombu Dojo under the direct instruction of Sensei MASATOSHI NAKAYAMA, where he became one of Nakayama's top instructors and collaborators. Together, they trained karate technicians of worldwide renown.

In addition to practicing karate for over 30 years, Sensei ABE also studied Iaido, which had a profound influence on the spirit of his karate—aiming to practice a form of realistic (street-effective) karate. His philosophy emphasized that karate should be pursued for physical and mental well-being, and to be able to defend oneself when needed.

In his youth, he was a renowned fighter in the JKA, where he also served as chief referee. During his karate studies, he taught in many countries and actively participated in spreading karate throughout the world. In 1990, he became the technical director of the JKA (Matsuno Section), and on February 10, 1999, he founded the JSKA (Japan Shotokan Karate Association), which has offices in over 70 countries.

He held the rank of 9th Dan and served as the Chief Instructor of JSKA worldwide. He is considered one of the legendary masters of the JKA. He passed away on December 21, 2019.

MITSURU NAGAKI - 9th Dan
JSKA World Chief Instructor

NAGAKI Mitsuru was born in 1950 in Ehime prefecture and was considered a promising future in judo, a discipline for which he had worked hard since childhood. Later, once he entered Nihon University, he studied karate under the guidance of Master Abe.

Since then, he has dedicated his life to karate. He is currently 9th dan and, thanks to his impressive technical precision, he is also a rare karate expert, powerful in both kata and kumite. His leadership is highly regarded in the world of karate and he has produced numerous world-class teachers, including world champions.

In addition, he never fails to train hard and has broken an unprecedented record, winning 27 consecutive master championships.

KHOSRO TAGHVA - 8th Dan
JSKA Italy Chief Instructor

Taghva Khosro is an Iranian karateka who developed a passion for the art of combat at a very young age. He began with boxing and later transitioned to Kanzen Ryu Karate. He came to Italy to study architecture, where he met Sensei Y. Sumi and Sensei H. Shirai from the JKA (FESIKA). There, he started practicing Shotokan Karate and eventually became an instructor.

He joined SKI (Shotokan Karate International) under Sensei Miura and Sensei Kanazawa, and after years of training, he earned the rank of 5th Dan and became the Technical Director for the Lazio region. He later left SKI and founded Fuskai (Fujyama Shotokan Karate-do Italia), where through regular weekly training, he began spreading Karate among enthusiasts and developing his own group of instructors.

In 2004, he joined JSKA under Sensei Keigo Abe, who awarded him the rank of 7th Dan and the title of Shihan. Throughout his karate career, Taghva has trained numerous athletes and instructors who have earned high regard from Sensei Abe for their technical skill. Many of his students have represented Italy with distinction in European and World Championships, and many remain his close collaborators to this day.

In 2008, at the JSKA World Championships in Manchester, Taghva won the gold medal in kata and the bronze medal in kumite. In 2014, at the JSKA World Championship in Terni, he was awarded the 8th Dan.
